Avoid Rental Scams and Fraud
While Zumper takes the security and safety of our platform very seriously, it is still a good practice to look out for rental scams. Just as you are conducting any activities or transactions online, when looking for that ideal rental, it is essential to be cautious when providing personal information, financial information, or making payments to people you don’t know.
Common Red Flags of Rental Scams
Below Market Rental Rate
Familiarize yourself with the going rate in the areas that you intend to rent. If it is too good to be true, it usually is.
Request to Send Payment Right Away
If you are asked to send money before you even see the property or meet the landlord in person, be wary. They often ask the payment to be sent via payment app, Zelle, Bitcoin or bank wire transfer.
Unable to Meet in Person
Use caution when the landlord is just unable to meet you in person. They may tell you that no one can meet you because they live abroad, have an emergency or other dramatic stories.
Unable to Show the Property
You may be asked to just go to the property and check it out yourself. Sometimes you are given reasons why you cannot see inside of the property, i.e., someone is sick, they are out of town. You may also be told that they are running late then eventually given a reason, for example, their car broke down, and never show up at the property.

How do I search for Section 8 or Housing Vouchers?
Section 8 is a federal housing program that pays a portion of low-income renters’ monthly rental payment. This means the renter pays a rate that better fits their budget, but the landlord still gets a fair market rate. It’s funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), but it’s administered through local public housing agencies, or PHAs.
Due to Fair Housing laws, listings on Zumper do not contain the term 'Section 8’ so, you cannot search for specific listings using 'Section 8' as a search filter. Listings on Zumper are user managed, so it's the property owner or manager who decides whether or not such vouchers are accepted.
For more information regarding a specific listing, and if you qualify, we recommend contacting the listing provider. Each listing has a listing phone number under, “Check Availability” or “Apartment Contact”. You also have the ability to communicate directly with the property contact using Zumper’s messaging platform.
Example:
While Zumper strives to provide consumers with the best tools and information to make smart rental decisions, we have no involvement in the communication between listing providers and potential tenants.
If you wish to file a complaint regarding fair housing violations, refer to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's online complaint page for more information.

How do I favorite a property?
Favoriting a property is a great way to save a listing to come back and review later. To save or favorite a listing for later, just select the save icon on the property, typically located in the top right corner. This will automatically add your property to your favorite queue, where you can return to review in further detail!
If you decide you no longer want to keep a property on you list, just unselect the icon and it will disappear.
While we do save all your favorites on a device, it’s best to create an account so you can easily sync your favorites from when you search on your computer or our apps. You can reach your favorites by selecting the Favorites tab when logged in on the Zumper home page.

There are a few different ways to do so:
From the search page:
Select the “Check Availability” button next to a listing from the page displaying your search results! A box will pop up with a message to send to the listing agent or landlord. Feel free to edit the text of this message to include more information about yourself, when you’re looking to move, and times that work for you to swing by and take a look. Once you’ve sent the message, you can send the same message to similar properties in the area with the click of a button!
From a specific listing page:
On the listing page, enter your information and select the “Send” button on the right side of the screen.

How do I use the search filters?
When searching for apartments, you can use search filters to help narrow down the search.
Main filters are located at the top of the screen on our website, or you can find them by selecting the “Filters” button in the top right corner on either of our mobile apps. If you would like to narrow your search results down further, selecting “see all filters” will allow you to see more detailed options.
For instance, if you’d like to search for only one bedroom apartments between $1,000 and $1,500, select the one bedroom filter and limit the price filter to your desired budget.
Using filters helps sort through all the content on Zumper to ensure results are exactly what you’re looking for!
